Randy, the simplest ideas are the best ideas and you nailed one. If a chef can have a brief description below every menu item, why can't the wine list have the same? The secondary effect, a smaller more well managed and understood wine list by the staff. Forget about the 15 page list, when a tight, well selected 1 page list with descriptions will do? A third effect, the wine and the food will likely be more in sync with each other.

This doesn't serve the Michelin or Wine Spectator Grand Award crowd, but a vast majority of restaurants don't need those to be successful.

BRAVO!! I am a small wine distributor and importer in New Orleans and agree with your insights 100%. Now we just need ALL restaurant wine buyers to read your well written article. Cheers!
